Fix for 4G LTE option missing in Samsung Galaxy S4 i9505

UPDATE (26th Apr, 2014) :- It is happy to inform you all the fellow Sri Lankans that this issue has been fixed for Dialog & Mobitel users through the 4.4.2 KitKat update. So all you have to do is update and the LTE mode will be available.

For the rest of the people who are still unable to get LTE working on i9505 devices around the world, please follow the guide.

Hey guys, first of all this post is only for the i9505 variant of the Samsung Galaxy S4. If you have an i9500, please do not continue because this is not regarding this particular model, which doesn't have 4G to begin with. So if you have a Samsung Galaxy S4 i9505, and if you are finding the LTE option missing in your network modes (if you don't get 4G signals), this is for you.

(Settings / More networks / Mobile networks / Network mode)

As I've mentioned above, if you don't get the LTE/GSM/WCDMA option in your network mode just like the above picture shows, don't worry, there is a way to get this back and no it is not something to do with your phone having any factory fault or anything like that. This is simply due to the issue that certain network carriers in some countries are not recognized by the device as networks that have 4G LTE.

Before we talk about how we fix the issue, you have to make sure that you already have obtained a U-SIM (4G Enabled sim 64k or 128k) and activated the 4G service from your service provider. To use LTE you have to get that special sim. if you are by any chance trying to enable 4G without getting the proper sim, you most certainly will not get 4G signals or the option itself. So make sure you have the proper SIM before doing anything else.

Now to the real issue, even though you get the U-SIM, there is a chance you won't get the LTE option. Not everyone experiences this, but unfortunately some do. This happens with certain service providers as I mentioned before. I for an instance use Dialog GSM (Sri Lanka) and experienced the same problem.

There are two methods, one very easy, and the other one is a bit complex. Method 1 is only for devices with the firmware 4.1.2 or 4.2.2 (below 4.3 / 4.4.2) version.

Here goes.

Method 1:
First make sure what firmware your device is currently on. (Settings / More / About device). Under android version, if your firmware is below 4.3 / 4.4.2 (eg: 4.1.2 or 4.2.2)  you are in luck, as in the procedure is simple as cake. Just go to Google Play and download 'Viaero 4G toggle'. When you open the app, select phone information and select LTE/WCDMA option from the 'set preferred network type' list. Voila, you will get LTE signals.

Method 2:
So by any chance if you had your i9505 updated to the latest version which is 4.4.2 or 4.3, unfortunately the 4G app will not work. But there is still a way to turn it on without the app. But as already told, a bit complicated than the method 1. But those computer/phone geniuses will find it very easy because it's not basically rocket science, just a matter of rooting the phone. By following this method, the issue can be completely fixed, meaning the option in the network mode will be restored, the only cost is having to root the device.

There are some risks and downsides involved by rooting the phone, so make sure you read the article in the following link top to bottom without continuing. And it is totally up to you if you decide to change your mind.

Here is the link to the article for rooting your i9505 device (4.3 / 4.4.2 firmware only) :

After you have rooted the device completely, go to Google Play and install 'ES file explorer'. Open the app, and press the menu key on the device and you will get a panel to your left on the screen. Scroll down and enable Rootexplorer (you will ask to grant permission by the SuperSU app since you have rooted, so give permission). Now use the search function and find the file with this EXACT name 'persist.radio.lteon' and delete it. Please make sure you are deleting this exact file. Don't delete anything else and end up bricking your device. After deleting restart the phone and that's it! You will have the LTE/WCDMA/GSM option in the network mode once you are booted and you will receive 4G signals if you are in an area with LTE coverage.

That about it. Hope all of the people out there with i9505s in hands with this issue can use this guide to fix the problem with no hassle.

Note: I do not take any responsibility if by any chance your device gets bricked, use these methods at your own risk!

Cheers!

  2. Hi

    I wonder if you have seen this thread;

    https://mobicity.zendesk.com/entries/21568855-Samsung-Galaxy-S4-i9505-missing-4G-LTE-

Not sure though from where I can download the XSA (unbranded) ROM file for the i9295 that supports 4G LTE.

The other option perhaps is to find a person in Colombo who is an expert on flashing smartphone devices.

    Any comment?

    1. Hi Ekendra, unfortunately that did not work for me. That was the first thing I tried after I bought the phone. I flashed the XSA rom myself, but it never brought the LTE option back. I hope this issue will be fixed through a future update.

  4. Hi
I am very thankful to you for the Software App info. I get download speeds of up to 20mbps on 4G as opposed 2.5mbps on H+. I have also read that Android 4.3 does not support the Viaero 4G Toggle App.

If you flash the rom with a XSA Firmware from a country where Samsung supports 4G compliant phones, will it work?

    1. I'm afraid it won't bring the native 4G option back, provided you're with Dialog or Mobitel. The reason why the LTE option is unavailable when you insert a Sri Lankan sim is because the device has an XLS file (basically a list) which has all the networks that are currently providing LTE all around the world. That list does not have Dialog or Mobitel. So the device is programmed not to recognize those which do not match the list and automatically hides the LTE option from the network mode, hence no 4G. That's why when you delete the file I mentioned in method 2 fix the issue since that file is designed to switch the option on or off depending on the carrier.

      Delete
    2. Thanks. Now it is clear.

So... whenever Dialog and Mobitel get their names on the SAMSUNG XLS list, will the device AUTOMATICALLY show the 4G LTE option? Or will we be offered some sort of upgrade option?

I wonder why Dialog and Mobitel do not lobby Samsung to get their networks on the Samsung XLS file?

I was at Hyde Park last evening and got a download speed with 4G in excess of 34gbps

      Delete
    3. Yes Ekendra exactly, Dialog and Mobitel should request Samsung to add their networks to the list. So let's hope this whole thing will be resolved in a future update. 34gbps is really good. :)

  10. Hi All, Yesterday I followed the steps just as given above & rooted the phone & did the download with Odin & I was able to see 4G option as described.
However today I observed that phone does not have a data connection even though mobile data is enabled. I tried swapping between network options but that didn't help.
However I went to the service provider (Dialog GSM in Sri Lanka) & got a 4G sim but when replaced & booted the phone, 4G option had vanished & still no data connection.
My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S4 i9505
    Please advice.

  11. Sorry false alarm above on the part of lost data connection, however I still have lost the 4G option, after rooting & doing what is mentioned with Odin I got the 4G option, but after replacing the sim to a 4G (& restarting the phone) I don't see the 4G option anymore.
    what should I do?

I suspect setting the content of the file from "false" to "true" will do the trick to.
I have no why this was the case, I suspect the kitkat update.
I like to believe I had 4G connections in Holland and Germany on holiday.
My provider in Belgium only has 4G since 2 weeks now.

    2. I suppose a simple OTA update would be sufficient. If you haven't received the KitKat update yet through OTA, maybe you could download and flash it through odin. I recommend flashing BTU (UK region) firmware (baseband - XXUFNB8).

Follow the steps in this article to flash the update. (http://www.ibtimes.com/android-442-kitkat-xxufnbe-official-firmware-released-samsung-galaxy-s4-gt-i9505-how-install-it).

Download the BTU firmware through this following link and use it instead of the file provided in the article if you're flashing the UK region firmware. (http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/3/?download=26516).

Please note that I do not hold any responsibility if you unfortunately brick your device by any chance. Less likely to happen if you follow the steps properly. Therefore do it at your own risk. :) Cheers!

    7. Ok. OXA is for Poland. I suggest flashing to BTU (UK) firmware would bring you the LTE option. You can follow the steps I mentioned above. Doing this won't void your warranty, I suggest you to reset your device after flashing although it is not a must. Just so you can start fresh without any messy apps.

    1. Hi Synthia,

Not sure what your problem could be, but I had no problems after I installed 4G Toggle app.

What I can suggest is that you uninstall the app and re-install via Play Store

After you install the app, click on the 4G Toggle icon and select "Device Information".
Then under PREFERRED NETWORK select LTE/GSM auto

      Good luck

    1. It's unusual for the 4G app to not work since you're on 4.2.2. It is known that it doesn't work for 4.3 onwards (because android has disabled the use of that function menu). Try the following code (enter it on the dial pad) and see if the menu opens up then.

      Code: *#*#4636#*#*

    1. Hi machan! sorry for the delayed reply. yes, 4.4.2 does fix the issue. either you have to wait till the update becomes available to ur phone or u can flash the new kitkat firmware manually using the odin software. flashing manually does not void warranty or does any harm so i recommend doing that if u don't want to wait for the OTA update.

I recommend flashing BTU (UK region) firmware (baseband - XXUFNB8).

Follow the steps in this article to flash the update. (http://www.ibtimes.com/android-442-kitkat-xxufnbe-official-firmware-released-samsung-galaxy-s4-gt-i9505-how-install-it).

    1. Instead of using 'search' function, go directly to root/data/property and manually deleted the file "persist.radio.lteon". Then restart the phone and you will be able to see LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect) on the network menu.

    2. First root your phone then install root explorer, pro version open it then go to data then property and you will see file named persist.radio.lteon delete this file and restart your phone..

  60. I still use the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active running on Android 4.2.2 with the 4G Toggle app to access wifi via 4G LTE.

I have now received a notification that an upgrade to Android 4.4.2 is available.

I was told that should I upgrade away from Android 4.2.2 that I may no longer be able to get 4G Toggle to work and thus lose 4G LTE access.

Can anyone advice me how I may upgrade to Android 4.4.2 and still be able to have 4G access.

    Thank you

  64. Anyone has a solution to the battery draining fast after upgrade to Android 4.2.2 KitKat?

    ReplyDelete
  65. As suggested in another post, I removed the SD card and SIM and waited more than 10 minutes before refitting the SD card, SIM and battery. Restarted the phone and charged to full capacity. Though it was suggested that I do a FACTORY RESET, I did not do so.
Now the battery does not drain quickly.
